What type of USB-C port does my device have?

Each machine and setup configuration can vary, so it's important to consult your device manufacturer for information regarding the compatibility settings of your USB-C port. If your laptop's USB-C port allows you to display images on your monitor when connected directly using a USB-C cable, it indicates that the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3. In such cases, the port is suitable for use with a docking station.

Windows Laptops and Computers

Windows laptops are equipped with symbols that indicate the functionality of specific ports. Here's a guide to understanding the symbol meanings:

Lightning bolt (Thunderbolt™ 3) - This symbol represents a port that can be used for charging and transferring a video signal. You can connect a monitor to this port, as it supports DisplayPort alt mode.

D (DisplayPort) - The "D" symbol signifies a port dedicated to transferring a video signal. You can connect a monitor to this port, as it also supports DisplayPort alt mode.

Battery symbol - The battery symbol indicates a port designed for charging your laptop. However, this particular port does not support DisplayPort alt mode.

Apple MacBooks

Apple MacBook models do not have a specific logo or symbol next to the USB-C port. To identify your MacBook model, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Apple logo located in the top left corner of your MacBook screen.
  2. Select "About This Mac" from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the window that appears, you will find information about your MacBook model.

FAQs

To connect two monitors at the same time through a single USB-C port your laptop must support MST (Multi-Stream Transport). When you connect two monitors to a dock and the laptop automatically detects them, that means it can support MST.

‘Alt mode’ allows a device with a USB-C port to output pictures to any HDMI display using the necessary cable.

Connecting a USB-C display using a VGA may have some limitations as it incorporated older technology.

SPECIFIC OPERATING SYSTEMS

MACOS MIRROR MODE

MacBooks can MIRROR the same display shown on
your laptop screen to one or more external displays.

14 in 1 Desktop hub can MIRROR to two external
monitors via dual HDMI ports.

9 in 1 Desktop Hub can MIRROR to three external
monitors via dual HDMI ports plus an additional VGA port (image only).

Please note:

MacBooks with the Apple M1 Chip can only mirror to a single monitor display. The Bonelk Desktop Hub, or any other similar device, cannot increase the number of displays you can connect to. It's important to note that this limitation is due to the hardware capabilities of the M1 chip and not a limitation of the hub itself.

MACOS EXTEND MODE

To set up multiple monitors using a desktop hub:

  1. Connect the first external monitor to the first HDMI output of the hub.
  2. Connect the second external monitor to the second HDMI output of the hub.
  3. Ensure the monitors are powered on and set to the correct input source.
  4. On your Mac, go to "System Preferences" and select "Displays."
  5. Customize the settings for each monitor according to your preference.
  6. Extend your macOS desktop across the built-in display and the two additional monitors connected to the hub's HDMI outputs.
  7. Note that compatibility may vary based on your Mac model, hub specifications, and macOS version. Refer to the documentation for compatibility information.

MACOS EXTEND MODE - ONLY WITH SEPERATE USB-C

MacBooks can EXTEND to a SINGLE monitor only.
Any additional monitors connected via the USB-C Desktop Hub will be shown as a
MIRROR of the laptop screen.

To connect an additional monitor in EXTEND mode the monitor must be connected to a separate ­USB-C port on your device.

WINDOWS MIRROR MODE

Windows laptops have the capability to mirror the display shown on the laptop screen to one or more external displays.

The 14-in-1 Desktop Hub can mirror the display to two external monitors using its dual HDMI ports.

The 9-in-1 Desktop Hub can mirror the display to three external monitors using dual HDMI ports and an additional VGA port. Additional monitors can be connected in mirror mode either by daisy-chaining them or by connecting them directly to your PC or laptop through additional ports that are separate from the Desktop Hub.

WINDOWS EXTEND MODE

Windows devices can extend to up to two monitors only. Any additional monitors connected via the USB-C Desktop Hub will be shown as a mirror of the laptop screen.

You can connect as many monitors as possible by extra ports on the connected Desktop hub or via additional ports on your device, however only TWO additional monitors plus your device screen will display in EXTEND mode. It's important to note that this limitation is based on the graphics card and the operating system capabilities of your device.

However, you can check your device's specifications to confirm the maximum number of displays that can be connected in extend mode.
